As a little girl I watched Mulan six times a day, no seriously, six times. I sat with my lola on the couch all day fixated on this girl who left everything she knew to fight for the honor of her family and her country. I think subconsciously I was drawn to Mulan more than the other Disney princesses, not simply because she looked like me, but because she was a girl who didn’t need saving from any prince; she saved the day herself. As I grew up, I continued to keep my eyes glued to the silver screen because the magic of storytelling made me feel so alive. It asks the audience to step outside of themselves, to have genuine care and curiosity about another person’s life, to dig deep into another’s soul, and that is powerful.
We had the opportunity to pick the brains of the mother-daughter duo of Kwento Comics, creator and CEO Cecilia Lim, and Co-founder COO Waverly Lim. These determined women founded Kwento Comics, the first all-female, all-Asian comic book company.
During the month of May, the United States celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The team at Kwento Comics has been a driving force behind positive awareness and community engagement, to help bring Asian American and Pacific Islander creators into the spotlight.
Created by the all-female and all-Asian team at Kwento Comics, The Mask of Haliya is the first of their comics that strives to bring Filipino and Asian mythology to a wider audience. The story is centered around a Filipino American teen named Marisol.
From the all-female/ all-Asian run Kwento Comics, the wonderful team behind The Mask of Haliya has created an epic story line that leaves the door wide open to explore more than just the wonderful and confusing world of Philippine Mythologies. Artist Renoida Renovilla whose work makes each page turn an absolute thrill coupled with the incredibly engaging story written by Kaitlyn Fajilan.
