In celebration of Filipino American History Month, Kwento Comics and Clover Press are partnering for a Kickstarter campaign to launch “The Mask of Haliya: Heir to the Warrior Moon,” a new young adult graphic novel that will explore lore and mythology originating from Philippine culture.
So, my favorite comic of the year has increasingly been coming from independent comics. This particular case comes from my San Diego comic con experience. I’ve been working on a big project since August, so these are coming a little later than anticipated, but I’m finally getting to release my San Diego comics I’ve loved. I did it last week, and it continues with my favorite comic of the year.

During the month of May, the United States celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The team at Kwento Comics has been a driving force behind positive awareness and community engagement, to help bring Asian American and Pacific Islander creators into the spotlight.
In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Kwento Comics will team up with Lumpia With A Vengeance to host “Free Komiks Day” at HiFi Kitchen in Historic Filipinotown on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Created by the all-female and all-Asian team at Kwento Comics, The Mask of Haliya is the first of their comics that strives to bring Filipino and Asian mythology to a wider audience. The story is centered around a Filipino American teen named Marisol.

For me, the star of the show is artist Renoida Renovilla whose work makes each page turn an absolute joy! Although the art would not be so meaningful without the incredibly engaging story written by Kaitlyn Fajilan.
